There is much
to tell . . . and much not to tell about
Southern Ohio's river county- Adams County.
Not far from the river, Serpent Mound is one
of the largest and most awesome serpent
effigies found in the entire United States.
Coiling for nearly a quarter mile, this
mound snakes its way along a section of
raised ground overlooking the Brush Creek
Valley. Until recently, the mystery stemmed
around who actually built this huge earthen
reptile. Once thought to be built by Adena
Indians, new radiocarbon dates now suggest
the mound was built nearly 2000 years
after by the Fort Ancient culture. But
what still remains a mystery is exactly
why the mound was built!

And there is a
darker side to one of Ohio's most charming
areas - The Counterfeit House was built in
1850. The home was erected by Oliver E.
Tompkins and was designed for the purpose of
counterfeiting 50 cent pieces and $500
bills. The house is said to have had special
"trick locks," exchange slots, and secret
slots built to look like chimneys. The home
is a private residence, however it does have
tour times.
